Chicago Fire Record

Becoming Major League Soccer’s first expansion team in 1998, the Chicago Fire were successful right out of the gate winning the MLS Cup in 1998 and making 3 Cups in their first 6 years of existence. After the 2003 the team continued to perform well making the playoffs every year from 2005 to 2009. Chicago moved into a new stadium in 2006 – Toyota Park – after spending years struggling to field a suitable and permeant home. Toyota Park is located 12 miles Southwest of Chicago’s city centre and can house about 20,000 soccer fans.

Since 2009 the Chicago Fire have been in a stretch of futility with only a single playoff appearance-  in 2012 – and a last place finish in 2015. The Fire’s poor performance can be attributed to the fact that the newer expansion teams are finally strong enough to push for the playoffs.

Chicago Fire holds a rivalry with multiple clubs. Due to the fact they did not play in the Eastern Conference until 2002, they have a historic rivalry with FC Dallas and the Los Angeles Galaxy. Newer rivals include D.C United and New England Revolution, with the fire being fueled by years of thrilling playoff matches and the fact Chicago defeated D.C United in the 1998 MLS Cup finals. Due to Chicago’s lack of talent the last few years the rivalries have taken a hit, but as the Fire begin their rebuild the clubs hatred for each other will return. Chicago also holds a rivalry with Columbus due to their geographical proximity.
