The Los Angeles Kings joined the NHL as part of first wave of expansion that took place in 1967. Unfortunately for fans of hockey in Los Angeles, the team made its first Stanley Cup final more than two decades later, when Gretzky dragged the squad. After the influence of The Great One, Los Angeles Kings lines became respectable on a regular basis, as they’re currently positioned in the upper echelon of the league.

Los Angeles Kings Record

Along with the Chicago Blackhawks, the Los Angeles Kings have been one of the dominant forces in the National Hockey League over the past half decade, winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in 2011-12, repeating the feat for the 2013-14 season. The 2014 win was especially impressive, as they became only the fourth team to come back down from 3-0 in a series to win. The 2011-12 Stanley Cup winning squad was more dominant, taking the cup in a less dramatic fashion.

As of late, despite the fact that they haven’t won a Presidents Trophy or threatened to take a division title, the Kings are considered a dreadful matchup for any western conference team that wishes to compete for the Cup. In fact, when they lose in the playoffs, the team that beats the Kings over the past while has ended up winning the cup.  This is a considerable change from the first four decades of the team’s history, when they were never considered a favourite, even when they stole Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers.

Few teams have the impressive level of mental toughness or resilience that the Kings have displayed in their current lineup. In addition to having one of the best defencemen in the league, they also have some of the best two-way forwards, allowing the Kings to stifle opponents while creating opportunities to counter with quick strikes. The only weakness of the Kings has been a lack of urgency during the regular season, making it more difficult for them when the playoffs roll around.

Since the core that took the Kings to their two Stanley Cup wings is still young, Los Angeles should be able to remain one of the top teams in the league, able to compete for a cup on a yearly basis during the foreseeable future.
